Sydney was sick the past two days. Yesterday was spent laying on the couch, today she was feeling better.
Sydney decided that since she wasn't at daycare, she should put ponies and piggies in my hair. So, today I ran around with two piggies and a pony, a headband, and LOTS of hair clips. She was so proud of her creation, that she talked about how everyone we saw when we go to pick Sarah up would love my hair. So, to school, to the doctor, to the store - I wore two piggies, one pony, one headband, and LOTS of clips. She got lots of compliments, I got kudos for being a good mom.
Thankfully, Sydney didn't get sick until Wednesday as DH's parents and sister were here earlier in the week. I love to see my SIL, who I don't see near often enough. I've not seen her in a few years, but we picked up as if it was yesterday.
She also didn't get sick until after we had signed her up for kindergarten. Yep - little bug is growing up.
Home improvements have continued, but I'm not sure how much will get done next week.
I finished Sydney cross stitch, but discovered that I can't get the sticky mounting board for the cross stitch so I can get it properly blocked. I'm wondering how much it would cost to ship one. Maybe I can use the Walmart 'ship to store' option. Not sure when I'll be in a larger city again.
I'm still missing the mounting hardware to the roman shade for Sarah. I think I will go buy more and see if I can arrange to return the others if I do find them.
We need to continue prepping the walls for the dining room so I can get them painted.
My sewing machine is giving me fits while I try to hem the curtains. I think I might try a different food because I think it might be the way the material is hitting the feed dogs. I'm still trying. If I can figure this out, I should be able to finish these curtains this weekend so I can start working on the dining room ones.
We have company for graduation in May. I have motivation to finish these last few projects.
But, with the sick child, I've had major sleepus interuptus. So I think I may just curl up and read.

The household list
This week I've been a bit busy trying to get some things done around the house.
My ILs were suppose to come for next weekend's ice show, but work interuptus and it looks like they will come for my FILs birthday instead. Not that I'm completely disappointed - next weekend will be a bear with dress rehersal on Saturday morning and a performance Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
So, I wanted to get a few things completed before they came (or at least progress).
The list:
* Finish sewing Sarah's roman shade (I have one more quilt to go, find the hardware, have DH help me make the mounting board, and sew the rings and velcro on).
* Finish sewing the hall curtains
* Finish the Pooh Bear xstitch for Sydney
* Sand bumpy areas of dining room walls
* Patch walls
* Paint the dining room
* Order the dining room light
* Call electrician to put up lights
* Finish decluttering office
* Finish decluttering back hall
Today, I took a boatload of books to the used bookstore (mine and MILs) and a bunch of stuff to Goodwill.
Yesterday, I went through four paper bags of papers and a few piles of things. Once all that was cleaned up, I moved our casio keyboard to the office. Knowing I was going to do this, I bought a headphone converter and splitter so the girls can use thier headphones together on the keyboard. I need to find a piano bench and it will be ready. I was shocked to discover I had forgotten how to read the bass clef. Internet helps.
The girls want to take piano lessons, but I've told them that they have too many activities but I would be willing to teach them myself. I can't teach technique and phrasing, but I can teach proper hand placement and notes. If they are serious, we can see about more formal lessons.

Various things
* I didn't end up getting DH a card. Some years he remembers, some years he forgets. I wanted to find the poem to make one, but I couldn't find it online and I didn't get back to the store. Ran out of time to make one, etc. So, last night he arrived with a card to me. It was just a wonderful card - celebrating 25 years of marriage. (we are currently at 11 so it was so cute.) I did show him my post from today (he doesn't read my blog) as a offering of how much the day meant to me.
* I decided for some really strange reason to try on my wedding dress yesterday. Not sure why. I'm about 3 lbs too heavy for it, 7 for wedding day weight - but with my wedding day foundation wear, it would fit. DH rolled his eyes when I told him about this. It wasn't all bad that I pulled the box out, I learned that the desiccant pack needed to be recharged and so I did that last night. I'll pull the box back out today to replace the desiccant and show the girls.
* At dinner many times, DH will start to mouth the words for the song 'Tomorrow' when I say the word. The other night I was avoiding saying the word. So, Sydney looked at me and said "mommy, do I have school the day after today." I quickly realized what she was trying to do and answered in a way that avoided the word 'tomorrow.' After Sydney asked several questions in a way that the answer 'tomorrow' would be correct, I finally looked at Sydney and said "Sydney, are you trying to say the word?" She got this great grin on her face and confirmed that yes, she was trying to trick me into saying the word. She is just too silly.
* Today, Sarah asked if they could decorate their bedrooms so they would look like a princess room. I asked what this would entail. Sarah wanted Ribbon around her room and Sydney wanted Princess Pictures put up in her room. Silly girls.
* DH is about 1/2 done painting Sydney's bed. Unfortunately his paint gun doesn't seem to be working all of a sudden. He is not sure what is wrong. I hope he figures it out because I hate seeing him so frustrated and Sydney has been so patient waiting for her bed. He finished building it this summer but hadn't had time to paint it.

Just what is the right answer?? and other musings
Today, I need to finish my syllabus. I'm trying to incorporate a new book. We can either read it in its entirety or in three parts. The book discusses aspects of political, religious, and corporate organizations - the three my course covers.
Both have some merit. I think later today I may take my white board markers and go to the library to figure out how to best use the book.
I think I've modified my first assignment so it's clear enough. I've changed the due dates for the papers. The first paper was written more slowly so they had time to learn how to approach it better, but the students didn't really use the time and then the end of the semester ended up cramped. We also ended up with them revising a paper over Thanksgiving break. Worse, the presentations were just after Thanksgiving and with the paper due the class or so before, they just felt rushed to complete the presentations.
I've made a few other changes in the class this year. It used to be that they were able to re-write all three papers. This year they can only re-write the first two. I think it will make life easier on me. I still don't like my third paper assignment - I need to find a new assignment for this year. The students just don't get it. I've decided that they need a bit more of an explanation about the papers when the first one is returned. I've decided that in order to get their paper back, they need to make an appointment with me so we can review it. The first assignment grades tend to be very low and the students seem to get very discouraged. Most of the reason they are low is that they didn't address components of the paper. For some reason, they can't seem to understand that if they are scored a 2 out of 5 for answering a item on the rubric (for example "compare and contrast points A and B") that means their grade was lower not because they are bad writers, but because they didn't answer the question. When they revise the paper, they end up changing three words on the section they answered, but they never do the compare contrast. Maybe if I meet with them first, they will do better.
I also am trying to find a way to discuss the paper assignment and what kind of information I'm looking for without giving away the assignment or having them just create papers that are all identical and only include ideas discussed in class. I need to think about this a bit.
Sarah still loves her haircut. Yesterday, she climbed on the roof of our house. During one of the storms, part of a tree blew onto the house and hasn't come down in any of the rain storms, etc. I asked DH if we could get it off the roof. He decided the best way was to put Sarah on the roof and have her take it down. This meant she went on the roof from the back, walked to the front of the house and took down the tree, and walked back to the back of the house. I covered by eyes. Sarah thought it was great. (ok, I've been on the roof to clear snow and I knew it was easy to walk on since it wasn't too steep of a slope.
I did find a walking foot to fit my machine! I just need to finish my prep work for class and clean the house and I can go back to sewing! I can't wait to see how it works on my shade.
On to other things.
